Maldives: Overwater Villa Experience

It has almost become the norm that we confirm our trips at the last minute, however, this is not advisable since cheaper rates are secured when you book way in advance. We normally have an idea of the next trip destination but we are not able to narrow down and confirm on the “when”. This year since I was turning 30years, I knew that I wanted to do something special for my BIG 30. The Maldives has always been close to my heart- though for the longest time because of Zika Virus- we had put it on hold. Now, it felt perfect to visit and celebrate my 3 decades on mother earth.

Grand Park Kodhipparu

Grand Park Kodhippharu is only a 20minutes speedboat ride from the Velana International Airport, Male, Maldives. To our advantage, we had purchased the Grand Park Eid offer which had the speedboat transfers as a complementary. The speedboat transfers are professionally carried out; we got a safety briefing and emergency floaters were provided to us. Our daughter enjoyed the ride so much,- it was so soothing to her- that she fell asleep.

Welcome to Paradise

On arrival, we were immediately handed over to our butler who would be with us the whole period of our stay. We were directed to our buggy while our luggage was loaded onto a different buggy and taken to our room. Our butler then took the pleasure of showing us around the hotel, giving us a detailed tour of each individual restaurant and what they have to offer, as we headed to our room(Ocean Water Villa). Check-in was done from our room which we felt was very thoughtful of the hotel, taking into account that we had a child, also, the temperatures and humidity were high.

Things to do on the Island

We selected the bed and breakfast package which allowed us to explore different options at the various restaurants as opposed to being limited to buffet meals at one specific restaurant. We always had our buffet breakfast at The Edge restaurant, which had a wide selection. We enjoyed watching the dolphins while having our breakfast.

We always had our lunch at the pool restaurant (Breeze Pool Bar and Dinning). It was sufficient for both of us parents since we could enjoy our food, cocktails and take a swim in the infinity pool, which our daughter also enjoyed being in the majority of the time. I also had the pleasure of cutting my surprise, complimentary birthday cake provided by the hotel here at the Breeze Pool Bar and Dining. If you want to catch the best sunset, Sunset by the Breeze Pool Bar is the best.

There were a few games…….ok there were a couple of games available, however, I was a bit disappointed that they did not have the game Jenga. They had board games like chess -actually many chess boards-, monopoly, scrabble and soccer foosball table. The games area was close to the kid’s play area so you could leave your children in the play area, as you enjoy your adult games. The children play area (which we felt was more suited for older kids- 4yrs and above), has a daily schedule of activities. They also offer nanny services from 9 am to 9 pm for $15/hr.

A point to note is that there are no free activities here. It was to our surprise that there was no single water activity that was free. We are normally used to having a few water activities as complementary, so this was a shocker for us. Well, we decided to try out the paddle boat since we could bring our daughter along. Other water sports available include Catamaran Sailing, jet-skiing, banana ride, parasailing, kayaking and windsurfing. They also have a beautiful gym that has great ocean views that one could enjoy while working out.

Our flight was scheduled for late in the evening, which was past the check out time and to our lovely surprise, Grand Park extended our check out time to coincide with our flight time. We were extremely grateful for this thoughtful gesture as we had not made the request to them. They also gave our daughter an unlimited supply of milk for free during our entire stay. The hotel also arranged for a complimentary departure assistance personnel to help us with checking in for our departure flight.

We really enjoyed our stay and I had a memorable birthday experience. So do you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of life? Yes? Then get packing, book yourself a trip and enjoy the beautiful, tranquil and breathtaking views of the Maldives! Do not forget to carry your summer clothes, beach essentials and last but not least, mosquito repellant. We did not encounter any mosquitoes, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
